Carrick-on-Suir to benefit from Uisce Éireann investment

Uisce Éireann crews will soon arrive in Carrick-on-Suir to begin replacing old and damaged watermains, helping to secure a more reliable and efficient water supply for the historic town. 

The works, which are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, involves the replacement of more than 1.7km of aging water mains with new, modern pipes.

Crews will be carrying out the works in a phased basis in the town centre, starting on Castle Lane side of North Quay, working towards the New Street junction of the N24 onto Main Street over Dillon bridge, then from New Street near the junction of N24 towards Main Street, to Bridge Street, West Gate towards the N24 and Main Street.

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management in the form of a stop/go system and some road closures will be in place during these periods of work. Local and emergency traffic access will always be maintained. 

Dave Murphy, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said.  “Carrick-on-Suir is a town renowned for its rich heritage and medieval charm, but like many historic areas, it’s been facing challenges due to aging infrastructure.  By replacing these old water mains, we are not only improving the day-to-day service for the local community but also protecting the towns long term water supply. "

Dave continued: "These works will help reduce leakage, improve water quality, and pressure and ensure a more resilient network for years to come.  I would like to thank the local community in advance for their patience and support as we carry out these essential works”

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Shareridge and are expected to be completed by October 2025.

The works may involve some short-term disruption to customers’ water supplies, but any planned outages will be communicated to affected customers no later than 48 hours in advance. 

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 – fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply. Uisce Éireann is on target to reduce the national rate of leakage to 25% by 2030, from a high point of 46% in 2018.
