Underground Overhaul: Ballingarry set to benefit from water network improvement works

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann crews will be arriving in Knockfierna near the Limerick village of Ballingarry in the coming weeks, bringing with them the promise of a more reliable water supply and improved water quality.

The works involve replacing 2.1 kilometres of old water mains prone to bursts with new modern pipes as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The works will take place in Knockfierna, Ballingarry and are due to commence in mid-June and are expected to be completed by September. Once these works are complete, customers in this area will enjoy an improved water supply with less disruption.

Commenting on the project, Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann said: “Old and damaged water mains remain a significant source of leakage and continue to impact communities like Ballingarry, causing low pressure and supply disruption. Replacing these old water mains that are in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground. By prioritising these upgrades, we are helping communities like Ballingarry to thrive. In advance of the works commencing, I would like to thank local residents for their cooperation and patience as we carry out these essential works”

To facilitate the safe delivery of the project and to minimise impact on the community, areas of work will be limited to short sections. Traffic management will be in place during this time with a combination of an automated Traffic Light System as well as a Road Closure on the L-1209 The Commons, Ballingarry. The road closure will be in effect from the 23 June for a period of 4 weeks with a diversion route in place along the R518. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

The works may require some short-term water supply interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

Details of any supply interruptions associated to this project will be updated regularly on the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website. Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 with any questions about the project.

Ward and Burke Construction Ltd. will deliver these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Identifying and repairing leaks will help Uisce Éireann to achieve its 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The national Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.
