Public consultation period for An Cheathrú Rua Sewerage Scheme to close next week
Uisce Éireann is reminding the community of An Cheathrú Rua that the non-statutory public consultation on the site selection process for a local sewerage scheme will close at midnight next Tuesday, June 30.
Stakeholders, including local residents and business owners, who wish to make a submission as part of the public consultation are encouraged to do so before the four-week consultation period ends next week. Submissions can be made via the dedicated project email address: ancheathruruass@water.ie
The non-statutory public consultation period has been open since Wednesday, June 3. Uisce Éireann is inviting feedback from the community on the site selection process for a proposed new wastewater treatment plant and associated infrastructure for the area.
At present, An Cheathrú Rua is one of the few remaining areas of Ireland where untreated wastewater is discharged from a public network directly to the sea. This practice poses an environmental risk and is not in compliance with EU and Irish legislation. The proposed new plant will address this issue by treating the wastewater before it is discharged to the sea.
As part of the non-statutory public consultation process, Uisce Éireann hosted a public information event at An Crompán in An Cheathrú Rua on Wednesday, 10 June. The information displayed at the event, along with project information sheets and FAQs, is available to view here.
The feedback received from local residents, businesses owners, community groups and elected representatives over the course of this public consultation period will play an important role in the process of selecting a site to move forward to the design and planning stage. All feedback received will be included in a consultation report which will accompany the application for planning permission when it is submitted.
Uisce Éireann has committed to hosting another public information event in advance of the submission of planning, when more detail will be available about the project design.
Angus Hall, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, has encouraged all interested stakeholders who have not already provided feedback to do so before the close of the consultation period next week.
“We have already received some really valuable feedback from the local community, both via email submissions and in-person at the recent event. This local knowledge and on-the-ground information is a crucial resource for us as we seek to progress this critical infrastructure project forward into the site selection and design phases,” said Angus.
“Anyone who wants to have their views recorded as part of the consultation should please make a submission before the close of the consultation period next Tuesday night.”
