Uisce Éireann is pleased to announce the successful completion of essential water network upgrades in Mountmellick, Co. Laois, marking a significant milestone for the town as part of the National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The project involved replacing almost 400 metres of ageing cast iron water mains along Parnell Street (R422), between Pearse Street and Connolly Street. These works have delivered a more secure and reliable water supply, improved water quality, and reduced leakage in the area.
Dave Murphy, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: “We’re delighted to have completed this vital upgrade for the people of Mountmellick. The replacement of old and deteriorating water mains means fewer bursts, better water quality, and a stronger, more resilient network for homes and businesses in Mountmellick. This investment reflects our commitment to safeguarding water services and supporting sustainable communities across Ireland.”
The works were carried out by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
This project contributes to Uisce Éireann’s national goal of reducing leakage rates to 25% by 2030. Since 2018, the Leakage Reduction Programme has already achieved significant progress, reducing the national leakage rate from 46% to under 37%.
Uisce Éireann thanks the residents and businesses of Mountmellick for their cooperation and patience throughout the works.

With our current climate, we cannot underestimate the value of clean drinking water, which is why these works are critical.
