Major milestone reached in Clonmel water supply upgrade

The Clonmel water supply upgrade project has reached another significant milestone, with two thirds of the planned 15km of new water main now laid. The project will strengthen the resilience of the water supply for homes and businesses across Clonmel and surrounding areas, ensuring a more secure and reliable service for years to come.

The installation of new water mains is now complete on Thomas Street and along the Fethard Road, with works continuing to make steady progress on Clashaniska Road and on the Cashel Road. Pipelaying in the centre of the town has progressed on to Dillon Street with night works from 7pm to 7am being carried out over the next two weeks.

The upgrade of the Monroe water treatment will also shortly commence and will further support the delivery of a robust water supply in the area. The rationalisation of the Poulavanogue supply is planned for Spring 2026, after which customers currently on that supply will be connected to the upgraded Monroe treatment plant. Customers can check their supply zone and water quality in advance by logging on to www.water.ie.

Commenting on the progress, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager Darragh Hannon said: "We are pleased to have made such significant progress in the pipelaying installation works and appreciate the patience of the community in Clonmel as we carry out these essential works. This project will significantly enhance the reliability of the supply in the area and forms part of a wider investment in critical water infrastructure by Uisce Éireann across the county".

Uisce Éireann is investing heavily in drinking water infrastructure across Tipperary, with multiple projects underway and planned across the county this year. In addition to the Clonmel water supply upgrade project, upgrades are also underway at Goatenbridge, Glenary and Glenbeha Water Treatment Plants, while from a wastewater point of view, upgrade works have recently been completed in Newport and are ongoing at the Fethard Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Previous Updates

Uisce Éireann’s significant investment in upgrading water infrastructure across the Clonmel area continues to make progress.

Works have now been completed on the Fethard Road, while watermain installation works are ongoing on the Cashel Road in coordination with the Active Travel Scheme, and along the L-3279 Rathronan to Clashaniska Road.

The next phase of the project will see works commence on Thomas Street from 9th June, in the vicinity of the train station carpark.

Commenting on the progress Uisce Éireann Programme Manager Darragh Hannon, said: “We are delighted to see this vital project progress to this stage. Once complete, the new water infrastructure will deliver lasting benefits for the people of Clonmel and surrounding areas, providing a safer, more secure water supply for years to come. We’d like to thank the community for their patience as we move into this next phase of works.”

The project is being carried out by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann. As well as the installation of the new water main, it involves an upgrade to the treatment facilities at Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and upgrades to the Rathronan Pump Station which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North reservoir and Poulavanogue network. The project will address water quality risks for customers on the town’s Poulavanogue supply, allowing it to be taken off the EPA’s Remedial Action List.

To ensure the works are delivered safely and efficiently a road closure is in place on the L-3279 Rathronan to Clashaniska Road. A Stop/Go traffic management system will also be in operation in the area of the works at the train station carpark on Thomas Street from 9th June. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times, and every effort will be made to minimise disruption.

The Clonmel Water Supply Upgrade continues to progress with more than 4km of a new 15km water main now installed along the R689 Fethard Road. Pipe laying works are also in progress along the Cashel Road and are being carried out in coordination with the Active Travel Scheme to minimise disruption on the community.

The project marks a significant investment in water infrastructure across the Clonmel area that will safeguard supply into the future and provide improved resilience to the network.

As well as the installation of the new water main, it involves an upgrade to the treatment facilities at Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and upgrades to the Rathronan Pump Station which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North reservoir and Poulavanogue network. The project will also address water quality risks for customers on the town’s Poulavanogue supply, allowing it to be taken off the EPA’s Remedial Action List.

Separately, works to upgrade the Glenary Water Treatment Plant are also underway and include the installation of 1.3 km of new water main that will connect the plant to Glenary reservoir, providing improved resilience to the network and further safeguarding the town’s water supply into the future.

The next phase of works will advance over the summer months on the L-3279 Rathronan Cross to Clashaniska and on Thomas Street and Dillon Street. A community information update on the next phase of works will take place on Monday, 7th April at the Talbot Hotel, Clonmel between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

Commenting on the project, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager Darragh Hannon, said: “This project will result in homes and businesses in Clonmel and surrounding areas being able to enjoy a safer, more secure water supply. By connecting to network storage at Clonmel North reservoir, it will also make the supply more resilient and safeguard it into the future.” The project is being carried out by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected in 2026.
