What are the benefits of this project?

Once complete, this project will:

  • Enhance the security and resilience of water supply for homes and businesses in the area.
  • Improve the quality and reliability of the water supply area of Clonmel.
  • Address ongoing operational issues that result in interruptions to the water supply and Boil Water Notices.
  • Allow for Clonmel’s Poulavanogue water supply to be removed from the EPA’s Remedial Action List, which identifies “at-risk” drinking water supplies.

What is involved in this project?

This major investment to upgrade the Clonmel Water Supply will involve:

  • An upgrade to the treatment facilities at Monroe Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
  • The installation of 15km of new water mains
  • Upgrades to Rahronan pumping station which will connect the Monroe supply to the Clonmel North Reservoir and Poulavanogue network.

The project will also provide for a more secure water supply to those currently supplied by the existing Monroe WTP from the large Clonmel North Reservoir.

Once the Monroe WTP upgrade works are complete, customers who were supplied from Poulavanogue WTP will now be supplied from Monroe WTP.

Clonmel Water Supply Upgrade Project

What is happening next?

The project is being carried out by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann and will be complete in 2026. Over 13km of the final 15km of new watermain has been laid to date with remaining installation ongoing between Rathronan Cross to Giantsgrave Reservoir. Crews have now completed all pipelaying work in the town centre and will commence work on permanent road reinstatement. Works will take place overnight on Thomas Street and Dillion Street from Monday, 24 November, to Friday, 28 November from 7pm to 7am, ahead of marking the beginning of the festive period. Upgrades are also underway at Glenary and Monroe water treatment plants. These projects are strategic investments which together will strengthen the security and resilience of the town’s water supply into the future.

To deliver the works safely and efficiently, traffic management will be required. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained. Impacted stakeholders will be notified directly and we endeavour to keep the local community updated as this project progresses. The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions. We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
