Enniscorthy community to benefit from a more resilient water supply with improved water quality

Families and residents in Parnell Avenue, Enniscorthy can look forward to a stronger, more dependable water supply as Uisce Éireann wraps up important upgrade works as part of our Leakage Reduction Programme.

In some older estates across the country water connections, typically made of iron or lead, were installed to the rear of properties, often referred to as backyard service connections.  The pipework due to age and deterioration can be a significant source of leakage. Backyard water services are usually shared, running through neighbouring properties making it difficult to detect and repair leaks. Since properties may share a connection, leaks and bursts can affect all properties in a neighbourhood which can result in low pressure. 

The works in Parnell Avenue involved the decommissioning of the ageing backyard water mains and the delivery of over 179 meters of new, modern water mains constructed along the public road. New service connections for customers have also been provided.  These improvements will help improve water quality, reduce leakage and provide a more reliable water supply for customers in Parnell Avenue.   

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD welcomed news of the completed works. “This is positive news for the families and residents living in Parnel Avenue who will benefit from a more reliable water supply through these upgrades to the old backyard network. A reliable water supply is fundamental to family and community life. With upgrade works by Uisce Éireann now complete in the area I’m pleased to see further progress on improvements to Wexford’s water supply network.”

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally- enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: national leakage is now at its lowest ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%. 

This project was delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, provision of a more resilient and sustainable water supply for customers, and considerable water savings.
