Staleen Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Uisce Éireann is progressing a project to upgrade the Staleen Water Treatment Plant.
Uisce Éireann has submitted a planning application for upgrades to the Staleen Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which will provide a more secure and sustainable drinking water supply for homes and businesses across Meath and Louth.
The project will benefit more than 70,000 customers and improve the resilience and reliability of the water supply.
Subject to planning approval, the upgrade works proposed are required to improve water quality, replace ageing or deteriorating infrastructure, enhance resilience and address sludge operational issues. This is a key step in improving water infrastructure in the Meath and Louth area to futureproof the water supply for communities across the region by improving reliability and resilience.
Uisce Éireann has carried out technical, environmental, and engineering assessments to inform the planning application.

What are the benefits of these works?
The upgrade works carried out as part of this project will:
- Improve water quality by replacing ageing or deteriorating infrastructure; and
- Ensure a secure and resilient water supply to the Meath and Louth areas.
What’s involved in this project?
The upgrade to Staleen Water Treatment Plant will involve:
- Introduction of tertiary treatment on final water to improve water quality;
- Enhancement of sludge treatment processes;
- Chemical storage improvement works;
- General site improvements; and
- Installation of solar PV to reduce energy consumption and enhance sustainability.
What are the next steps?
Subject to the necessary consents, it is envisaged that construction works will commence in early 2027.
