Uisce Éireann crews will soon be on the ground in Kiltimagh to commence works on a major programme of mains replacement in the East Mayo town.
Over 1.5km of aging water mains will be replaced on the Swinford Road (R320) as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
In total, 1,521 metres of new, modern pipes will be laid as part of this programme of works. The works will ensure a more secure and reliable supply of drinking water for the local community, while significantly reducing the risk of bursts and other operational disturbances on the local network in the years ahead.
Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said that customers in Kiltimagh and the surrounding areas can look forward to an improved water supply as a result of these works.
“By replacing more than 1.5km of aging cast iron mains with modern pipes, we will safeguard the supply for domestic and non-domestic customers alike and provide a more reliable water supply for the town of Kiltimagh and its communities,” said Enda.
The works are due to begin next week and will continue through the winter until early 2026.
These significant works will require a road closure at Attavally, which has been granted by Mayo County Council. The road closure will be in effect from Monday, 3 November until Monday, 19 January. To minimise disruption during the Christmas period, the road will reopen between Monday, 22 December and Monday, 5 January.
While the road closure is in place, traffic flows in both directions will be diverted via the R321 (Bohola Road) and the N5. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.
“We acknowledge that these works may cause some disruption while in progress and we thank customers for their patience," continued Enda.
"The road closure is necessary to ensure the safety of our contractors, road users and the general public while works are underway."
The works may also involve some short-term interruptions to the water supply for nearby customers. The project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours' notice prior to any planned interruption.
The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction.
