West End works will improve water supply in City of Tribes
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section
Summertime in Galway always brings with it a feeling of optimism and excitement, and now both residents of and visitors to the City of Tribes have yet another reason to celebrate.
Significant mains replacement works to the west of the city centre, which will significantly improve water quality for Uisce Éireann customers in the area and reduce levels of leakage on the network, will begin shortly.
These works will take place to the west of Galway City Centre and the entire programme will involve the delivery of almost 1.5 km of new water mains for the area. The first phase of works will take place along Palmyra Park and Raleigh Row.
The works are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme and will lead to a more secure and reliable water supply for customers in Galway City, and an improvement in water quality for homes and businesses.
Some sections of work will require temporary road closures, which have been granted by Galway City Council. Palmyra Park (L-5117-0) will be closed from Monday, 9 June until Friday, 27 June. Raleigh Row (L-5110-0) will be closed from Monday, 30 June until Friday, 1 August.
Traffic flows will be diverted during this time, but local and emergency access will always be maintained. The diversion route for Palmyra Park will be via the R-337-4, the R-864-16, and the L-5109-0. The diversion route for Raleigh Row will be via the L-5113-1, the R-337-2, the L-5115-0, and the L-5111-0.
Customers whose properties will be directly impacted by these improvement works will be contacted directly by the contractor with information about the required works.
The works may involve some short-term water outages, but the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned outages. Some temporary traffic management measures may also be required during periods of the work, but these will be communicated ahead of time.
Enda Mac Namara, programme manager with Uisce Éireann, said the works will significantly reduce the volume of clean water lost to underground leakage and provide a more reliable supply for customers in Galway City.
“This programme of works are necessary in order to improve water quality for Uisce Éireann customers in the area. The works will also reduce instances of low pressure and other service disruption on the network, by replacing old and deteriorating mains with new, modern pipework,” said Enda.
“We acknowledge that the works will create some disruption for residents and businesses in the area, and we wish to thank affected customers for their patience in advance of the works. Our crews will work as quickly and as diligently as possible to complete the programme of works.”
The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
