Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann is continuing at pace with the intensive flushing programme in the Inter South-East area of the city. This programme is a series of proactive flushing works which aims to improve water quality for homes and businesses across Cork City.

These flushing works are part of Uisce Éireann’s network improvement plan to address water discolouration issues.

Planned flushing will begin in the listed areas on the evening of 14 April, and it is expected to take approximately two nights to complete. The areas being covered in this round of works are:

  • Old Youghal Road (opposite Cork Prison) and heading east
  • Frankfield View
  • Brian Dillon Park
  • Dillons Cross
  • St Mary’s Avenue
  • Ballyhooley Road
  • Sunnyview East

Water Operations Lead for Uisce Éireann, James Goulding said: “It is great to see our crews progressing through these works. As we begin this next round of flushing, we hope to see continued improvements from this intensive flushing programme. I would like to thank customers for their patience while these works are underway and remind people to report instances of discolouration through Uisce Éireann’s customer service channel.”

As works progress through the area, signage will be put in place. Customers can sign up with their Eircode and mobile number at our Text Updates page.

To minimise disruption to the community, the works will be carried out at night-time during off peak usage hours, typically starting after 10pm and finishing in the early hours of the morning. This is to allow the network to have time to return to normal before the morning demand starts, reducing the potential for discoloured water at customers’ taps.

Uisce Éireann thanks customers for their patience as we continue to work to reduce instances of discolouration across Cork City, and regrets any inconvenience caused.

Uisce Éireann reiterates its public health advice that water is safe to drink when it is running clear. Water can be discoloured due to sediment from old cast iron pipes, works on the water network in your area or elevated levels of naturally occurring metals such as manganese and iron.

More information on manganese can be found in the HSE’s Frequently Asked Questions re Manganese in Drinking Water manganese-in-drinking-water-faqs.pdf. More information on iron can be found in the HSE’s Frequently Asked Questions re Iron in Drinking Water available here iron-in-drinking-water-faqs.doc
