Stronger and more dependable water supply for communities in Cahir and Foxhall following water main upgrades

Homes and businesses in Cahir and Foxhall are set to benefit from a stronger and more dependable water supply following the completion of water main upgrades by Uisce Éireann.

These improvements are all about supporting everyday life – whether it’s putting the kettle on in the morning, running a local business, or ensuring community services continue to operate smoothly with a clean, reliable water supply.

As part of these works, Uisce Éireann replaced more than 1.6km of ageing water mains with modern, resilient pipes in Foxhall, along with a further 720m of water mains in Cahir. These older pipes had been prone to bursts and leaks, causing supply interruptions and the loss of treated drinking water, a valuable resource. By reducing leakage and water loss, this upgrade will help conserve treated drinking water, which is especially important while the Water Conservation Order remains in place.

Uisce Éireann's Dave Murphy said he is proud to be part of the team that has delivered these long-term benefits for the community.

"These upgrades will help provide a more reliable water supply for the communities of Cahir and Foxhall, reducing the risk of bursts and interruptions while making the network more resilient for the future.

"Investing in and renewing ageing infrastructure is an important part of ensuring communities have access to safe, dependable drinking water and supporting the continued growth and development of the area.

"I'd like to thank local residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation throughout the delivery of these works. We appreciate that infrastructure projects can cause temporary disruption, and we are grateful for the understanding shown while these essential improvements were completed."

The projects form part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing work to reduce leakage and improve the performance of the public water network.

This upgrade is just one example of how Uisce Éireann is tackling leakage across the country. With more than 65,000km of underground water mains – enough to circle the Earth one and a half times – finding and fixing leaks can be challenging, particularly when they are hidden underground. However, significant progress is being made. National leakage levels have fallen from 49% in 2014 to 36% today, their lowest level on record.
