Renewed appeal to conserve water in Clones and surrounding areas

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann continues to appeal to customers in Clones and the surrounding areas to be mindful of their water usage and to make all efforts to conserve water where possible.

Levels at local water sources, including Corconnelly Lough, remain extremely low after a prolonged period of lower-than-average rainfall.

Met Éireann data taken from the nearby Ballyhaise Weather Station in Co Cavan shows that combined rainfall over the past 14 months has been 937mm (July 2024 – August 2025). This is down significantly from the long-term 14-month average of 1,198.2mm, a decrease of 22%.

As a result, customers in Clones and the surrounding areas are again being asked to reduce their usage where possible to allow levels in local water sources to recharge.

Uisce Éireann is exploring options to supplement local supplies from new sources. These emergency exploration works are ongoing but in the meantime, customers are asked to be mindful of their usage.

Uisce Éireann’s Peter Gallagher said this renewed appeal comes at a critical time of the year. "We wish to thank customers for their efforts to conserve water over recent months, but unfortunately, source levels remain critically low in the Clones area and we are renewing our appeal for customers to be mindful of their usage,” said Peter.

“We are hopeful that as the weather changes and rainfall increases, levels in our local sources will replenish. But for now, we are again asking customers in Clones and the surrounding region to conserve water where possible and help us to manage our resources as best we can.”

Previous Updates

As the dry weather continues, Uisce Éireann is reminding customers in Clones and surrounding areas of the need to conserve water and protect supply.

Reduced rainfall for more than a year has seen levels at local water sources drop significantly and, given typical trends and the current spell of dry weather, levels are expected to decrease even further in the coming months.

Met Éireann data taken from the nearby Ballyhaise Weather Station in Co Cavan shows that combined rainfall over the past 14 months has been 890.5mm. This is down significantly from the long-term 14-month average of 1,198.2mm, a decrease of 26%.

As a result, customers are being asked to be mindful of their water usage and to allow supply to catch up with demand. High usage can lead to pressure reductions which can impact the supply to customers.

Uisce Éireann’s Peter Gallagher explained that the reduced level of rainfall over the prolonged period of time has put Clones and its hinterland under significant strain.

“We are asking customers in the area to conserve water in order to protect supplies. Any reduction that customers can make in their usage can collectively result in significant supply improvements for all homes and businesses.

“It’s important that we all consider our water usage and look at simple yet impactful ways to conserve water. It can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, but even small changes can make a significant difference,” Peter said.
