Rathmullan community reaping the rewards of Uisce Éireann investment

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann customers in Rathmullan are enjoying a more reliable water supply this summer as a result of improvement works carried out by the utility in recent months.

Uisce Éireann prioritised more than 600 metres of damaged water mains for replacement in the seaside village which has resulted in a reduction in the number of bursts and supply interruptions for customers.

The new pipework has also put an end to the leakage of treated drinking water into the ground.

Crews carried out this water main replacement project along Pound Street and Main Street in the village as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager Patricia Lowry is proud to have delivered this project for the community in Rathmullan.

“Replacing that old stretch of water mains has brought a range of benefits for our customers in the area including reliability of supply and improved water quality. Our crews worked to minimise disruption for the community, and we thank locals for their support while the works were ongoing.”

Previous Updates

Uisce Éireann customers in Rathmullan can look forward to a more reliable water supply as significant improvement works get underway in the seaside village this month.

Uisce Éireann has prioritised more than 600 metres of damaged water mains for replacement which will ensure a reduction in disruption from bursts and supply interruptions for customers.

These important works will not only give local homes and businesses more confidence in their supply, but the new pipework will put an end to leakage of treated water into the ground.

Crews will be carrying out this water main replacement project along Pound Street and Main Street in the village.

Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager Patricia Lowry is looking forward to delivering the project for customers in Rathmullan. “This work will bring a range of benefits for our customers in the area including reliability of supply and improved water quality. It will also help us achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.”

To deliver the works safely and efficiently, a road closure will be necessary on Pound Street and Main Street, Rathmullan, from Monday, 31 March to Friday, 6 June. All traffic management will be removed, and the road reopened for the bank holiday weekends that occur during this time.

Diversion routes will be in place and the community can be assured that local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Patricia continued: “We understand that this type of work is inconvenient, and our crews are making every effort to minimise disruption to the local community. These works are vital to ensure Rathmullan’s security of supply now and into the future, with the long-term benefits far outweighing any short-term inconvenience. We thank the community for their patience and cooperation as these essential works progress”.

These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned interruptions.

Farrans Construction are carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann which are expected to be completed by Summer 2025.

These improvement works are another example of Uisce Éireann’s investment in the village of Rathmullan. Works on the €50m upgrade of the wastewater infrastructure network taking place in Rathmullan, Ramelton and Milford are nearing completion. When completed, this project will reduce the risk of sewer flooding and address non-compliant sewer overflows into the Maggy’s Burn, Leannan Estuary and Lough Swilly. It will also improve the capacity of the sewer network allowing for current and future population growth, and supporting the social and economic development of Rathmullan, Ramelton and Milford and the surrounding area.

The Uisce Éireann Customer Contact Centre, open 24/7 on freephone 1800 278 278, is available to answer any queries.
