Planning application to be submitted for major water supply upgrade in Letterkenny and Inishowen

Uisce Éireann will this week submit a planning application for the Letterkenny and Inishowen Water Supply Upgrade Project. This upgrade is designed to provide a more secure and sustainable drinking water supply for homes and businesses across Letterkenny, Inishowen and surrounding areas.

The project will benefit more than 29,000 customers by improving the resilience and reliability of the local water supply.

Subject to planning approval, the project will include upgrades at Illies Water Treatment Plant, the construction of new treated water storage reservoirs at Burt and Knocknamona, and the installation of approximately 13km of new trunk water mains. These upgrades will strengthen the network, enhance operational resilience, and help reduce the risk of water supply interruptions.

Uisce Éireann's Programme Manager, John McElwaine, said: "The submission of this planning application represents a key step in improving water infrastructure in the Letterkenny and Inishowen region. These improvements will help future-proof the water supply for communities across the region by enhancing reliability and resilience.”

Uisce Éireann has carried out extensive technical, environmental, and engineering assessments to inform the planning application and will continue to engage with local stakeholders as the project progresses.

Customers, elected representatives, and stakeholders will be kept informed as the project moves through the planning process and into the next stages of development.
