Over 4.5 million litres of water saved daily in Dublin since January through Uisce Éireann leak repairs

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann’s ongoing efforts to reduce leakage and protect Dublin’s water supply are delivering major results, with more than 4.5 million litres of water saved every day thanks to four significant leak repairs completed across the city since January.

On James Street, a substantial underground leak was repaired, resulting in daily savings of 726,000 litres, enough to supply around 1,400 homes. On the Malahide Road in Marino, a similar intervention is saving 326,000 litres per day, meeting the water needs of approximately 625 households. The largest savings have come from a major repair on the Long Mile Road, where 3.2 million litres are being saved daily, enough for 6,100 homes, or the full population of Dublin 15. At Merrion Row, leak repairs are saving a further 286,000 litres daily, supplying the equivalent of 550 households.

These repairs were delivered under Uisce Éireann’s Find and Fix scheme, which focuses on locating and repairing difficult-to-detect underground leaks in the public water network. The scheme is a key part of the wider National Leakage Reduction Programme, aimed at minimising water loss, improving the reliability of supply, and strengthening Ireland’s water infrastructure for the future.

Declan Healy, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said:

“These four Find and Fix schemes are just some examples of the efforts being made across the capital. Every litre saved is a step toward a more secure and sustainable water supply for the people of Dublin. The Find and Fix programme allows us to target the most problematic leaks, often hidden underground, and deal with them quickly and effectively. These recent repairs show just how impactful that approach can be, with millions of litres saved daily and less pressure on the wider water network.”

The importance of these efforts is underscored by growing demand for water across the region. In 2025, demand for treated water in the Greater Dublin Area has reached record levels, putting severe strain on supplies serving Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, and Meath. Uisce Éireann has a range of initiatives underway to help manage this demand, including the Leakage Reduction Programme, other conservation measures, and ongoing capital upgrades to critical water infrastructure.

In the longer term, a new water source from the Lower Shannon is being progressed through the Water Supply Project Eastern & Midlands Region, which will support sustainable development and relieve pressure on the existing network.

Members of the public also have a key role to play in conserving water. Simple steps at home, such as turning off taps, using water-efficient appliances, and avoiding unnecessary use, can collectively make a real difference. Leaks on private property may be eligible for repair through Uisce Éireann’s First Fix Free scheme, which offers a free leak investigation and repair for homeowners. Leaks in public areas can be reported directly to Uisce Éireann by calling 1800 278 278. For more water-saving tips and information, visit www.water.ie/conservation.
