Mains upgrades will accelerate Athenry’s capacity for sustainable growth
Uisce Éireann’s ongoing investment in Athenry’s public water network shows no signs of slowing down, with works having commenced on a programme of mains replacements in the Bridge Street and Ballydavid Cottages areas of the town.
More than 750 metres of new mains will be laid as part of this programme of works, which is being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s Accelerated Growth programme. Projects categorised as Accelerated Growth are designed to support the sustainable growth of settlements with significant forecasted housing demand.
The works in Athenry are taking place along Bridge Street (the L3112), where 400m of existing mains will be replaced, and at nearby Ballydavid Cottages, where approximately 350m of mains will be replaced, strengthening the network and providing capacity for the future growth of the town.
Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said the new upgrades are further evidence of Uisce Éireann’s commitment to delivering for Athenry and the surrounding areas.
“We have recently completed works on a programme of mains replacements in the Barrack Street and Abbey Row areas of Athenry, and we have now commenced with a new programme of works,” said Enda.
“Our Accelerated Growth programme is designed to increase resilience and boost capacity in towns such as Athenry, which are forecasted to experience significant growth in the coming years,” said Enda.
“This significant programme of mains replacements at Bridge Street and Ballydavid Cottages will help to support the sustainable growth of the town, while also improving water quality for existing customers and driving down rates of leakage on the network.”
Some traffic management measures, in the form of two-way and three-way traffic lights, will be in place to facilitate the works being carried out safely and efficiently.
These works are being carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Works are due to be complete in August 2026.
