Leakage Reduction Programme continues as Knocknpogue and Knockfree in Cork City set to benefit

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann is replacing 2.5 kilometres of old cast iron water mains prone to bursts on the northside of Cork city. The programme to replace the water mains with new modern pipes will commence next week and will provide a more reliable water supply, improve water quality, and reduce high levels of leakage in the area.

Works will take place in Knockpogue Avenue, Knockfree Avenue, Fairfield Road and Farranferris Avenue. To deliver the works safely and efficiently, traffic management will be in place. Local and emergency access will always be maintained.

Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann said: “This section of water mains was prioritised for investment and replacement by Uisce Éireann due to its age and deteriorating condition with the old cast iron mains dating back to the 1940s.”  In conjunction to the works in Knockpogue and Knockfree, Uisce Éireann is also busy in the northside with the replacement of 2.4km of old cast iron mains in Gurranabraher, with works expected to be completed next month.

“These improvements are critical, and we are delighted to progress these upgrades for the local community which will boost the resilience of the water network and improve service in the city for generations to come,” said Brian.

The works are being carried out by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann with works expected to be completed in March 2026.  The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned disruption. The works also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customer’s water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these are being replaced.

Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 with any questions about the project or visit the  Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website for regular updates.
