Uisce Éireann customers in Kealkill, Bantry can now enjoy a more reliable water supply after the recent completion of works to replace almost 5km of aged watermains in the area, putting a stop to bursts and driving down leakage giving locals an improved confidence in the security of their water supply.

The works, which were carried out as part Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme saw two sections of aging water mains replaced at locations along the R585 from Kealkill Water Treatment to Collins bar and along the 5584 from Pearson’s Bridge to Burke’s Gala.

The replacement works commenced in June 2024 and were carried out in phases to minimise the disruption to traffic flow and to reduce the inconvenience caused to local residents. Ward and Burke Construction Ltd delivered the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Jack Cronin, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, thanked the local communities for their cooperation while these essential works were underway.

“We are committed to enabling communities such as Kealkill to thrive and as a result of these leakage reduction works, local customers are enjoying a more secure and reliable water supply. The replacement of these old and damaged watermains will reduce the instances of bursts, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the volume of clean drinking water lost into the ground protecting our most precious resource”

Following the completion of the works, it is necessary to reinstate the permanent road surface and these works will be programmed and carried out in due course by Uisce Éireann in partnership with Cork County Council.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply. Uisce Éireann is on target to reduce the national rate of leakage to 25% by 2030, from a high point of 46% in 2018.
