Douglas to benefit from Uisce Éireann’s continued investment in Leakage Reduction Programme

Uisce Éireann is commencing a major watermain replacement project in Douglas, which will see 5km of decades-old cast iron pipes replaced with new modern pipes. The programme of works will provide a more reliable water supply, improve water quality, and reduce high levels of leakage.
This is the second significant mains replacement project in Cork City this year, as Uisce Éireann continues to address leakage and discolouration reports targeting the worst impacted areas of the network. Works, which commenced in February, are now significantly progressed in Gurranabraher.
The works in Douglas will take place in the following areas: Whitethorn Estate, Tramore Lawn, Belvedere Lawn and Douglas Road.
The works will commence on Monday, 09 June at Whitethorn Estate, Douglas and works on Douglas Road will start on Monday, 23 June. Mains rehabilitation works at Tramore Lawn and Belvedere Lawn will be completed in Spring 2026.
To safely and efficiently deliver this project, works will be carried out in phases with some localised road closures and traffic management required. Emergency and local access will always be maintained.
Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, Brian McCarthy said: “This section of water mains in Douglas was prioritised for investment and replacement due to its age and the deteriorating condition of the cast iron mains. These improvements to the water network are critical and we are delighted to progress these upgrades for the local community, which will strengthen the water network in the city for generations to come.”
“Replacing old watermains in a busy area like Douglas is not an easy task. It takes a lot of planning and liaising with the local authority, residents and businesses. We are confident that the short-term inconvenience will be outweighed by the long-term benefits of this essential project. We would like to thank customers and the community in advance for their cooperation and patience while we work to undertake these essential works,” said Mr McCarthy.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd is carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann and works are expected to be completed by Spring 2026.
The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.
Details of any supply interruptions associated to this project will be updated regularly on the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website. Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 with any questions about the project.
