Uisce Éireann customers in the picturesque East Galway village of Craughwell can look forward to an improved supply of clean, safe drinking water.
Works are due to commence on a programme of mains replacements which will see over 760 metres of the village’s aging cast iron mains replaced with new, modern pipes.
The works are due to take place in the centre of the village, taking in the R446, the R347 and Killora Court. Some works to prepare the site will begin this week before the ground is broken on the project from next Monday (3 November).
Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said these mains replacement works will provide real benefits for the community of Craughwell.
“We’re delighted to be getting underway with this significant programme of works in Craughwell. By replacing old cast iron mains with new, modern pipes, we are not only improving the quality and reliability of drinking water flowing through our customers’ taps; we’re also helping to safeguard water supply to the village and surrounding areas for years to come,” said Enda.
The works, which are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, will provide tangible benefits for residents, businesses and visitors to Craughwell.
As well as improving water quality and providing a more secure and reliable supply, the upgrades will reduce the likelihood of bursts and other operational issues on the network moving forward.
They will also contribute towards Uisce Éireann’s aim of reducing leakage rates nationwide.
The programme of works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water mains in the road to customers’ property boundaries, and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.
Areas of work will be limited to short sections at a time to minimise disruption to customers. In order to safely deliver the works, traffic management will be required in the form of a lane closure managed by traffic lights. Local and emergency access will always be maintained.
The works may also involve some short-term interruptions to the water supply. The project team will ensure that impacted customers are given a minimum of 48 hours-notice prior to any planned interruption.
The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and are expected to be completed early next year.
