Completed works will bring a more secure supply to historic town of Cashel

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

The historic town of Cashel is set to enjoy a more secure and reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann recently completed their latest upgrade project in the town, replacing over 750 metres of aged cast iron water mains with new modern pipes.

The works, which took place between Cathal Brugha Street and Lacey Square, will improve the reliability of the town’s water supply while also reducing high levels of leakage in the area.

Programme Manager Dave Murphy highlighted Uisce Éireann’s ongoing commitment to improving water supply in Cashel and across Tipperary: “We are making progress in delivering a more secure and reliable water supply to communities across Ireland.

“In addition to these works, we also recently replaced over 300 metres of water mains between the junction of Rock Lane and Moor Lane. Upgraded modern pipework now delivered for Cashel will bring a more robust and reliable water supply.  I would like to thank the local community and elected representatives for their support and patience during the delivery of this essential project."

Shareridge completed both projects on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Cllr Declan Burgess was on hand to mark the official completion of Uisce Éireann’s water mains replacement project in Cashel. He said: “This project is a key milestone in improving water services for the people of Cashel and surrounding areas, and I want to thank Uisce Éireann for delivering this important work.

“Reliable infrastructure is critical to the future of towns like Cashel and this investment will bring lasting benefits to the local community.”

Uisce Éireann is investing heavily in drinking water infrastructure across Tipperary, with multiple projects underway and planned across the county this year.

Uisce Eireann’s Infrastructure Delivery Director Maria O’Dwyer, a native of Cashel, recognised the importance of continuing to invest in critical infrastructure: "I’m very proud to be playing a part in delivering critical infrastructure that will support Cashel as it continues to prosper and thrive.

“In addition to 7km of water main successfully replaced in 2024, more than 18km has been completed so far this year, with over 13km of water main currently under construction and almost 17.5km to be upgraded over the coming months across Tipperary.

"We are also making progress with major upgrades to water infrastructure in Clonmel, Goatenbridge and Glenbeha, while from a wastewater point of view, upgrade works are currently underway at the Fethard and Newport Wastewater Treatment Plants.

“Access to safe and secure water is not just a necessity; it is a foundation for health, prosperity, and a sustainable future.”

Leakage reduction works taking place in 2025 include 7.9km of water mains that are currently being replaced between Ballinard and Killenaule, 6.2km of water mains being replaced between Thomastown and Ballymacaddy, 1.7km of water mains being replaced in Carrick-on-Suir, while a further 5.6km of water main is set to be replaced between Ballypatrick and Kylanoreashy.

Identifying and repairing these leaks will help Uisce Éireann to achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.
