Conserving water and driving down leakage continues to remain a priority for Uisce Éireann, and Ennistymon is one community that has recently benefited from upgrade works with over 550m of old and damaged water mains recently replaced. These works are critical in conserving precious water resources and providing a more secure and reliable water supply for the community.
The works, which were carried out as part Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme saw two sections of aging water mains replaced. Over 550m of watermains have been replaced most recently along the L-1050 Sroohil, and 900m of cast iron watermains replaced along the Circular Road and in early 2024.
These replacement works commenced in January 2024 and were carried out in phases to minimise the disruption to traffic flow and to reduce the inconvenience caused to local residents.
Speaking about the project, Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager, Jack Cronin said:
“We are delighted to have completed these essential works in the beautiful town of Ennistymon. The old water mains were prone to bursts and high levels of leakage. Replacing these aged and damaged water mains with modern pipes is a crucial step in reducing drinking water lost by leakage, improving water quality, and providing a stronger and more secure supply for generations to come. We thank the community for their warmth and patience while the works were being completed”
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd carried out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Identifying and repairing these leaks will help Uisce Éireann to achieve our 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%. The national Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.
