Boil Water Notice issued to protect the health of customers on the Crotty's Lake Public Water Supply

Customers in parts of Carrick-on-Suir, including Coolnamuck, Carrigbeg and Seskin must boil their water before using it for drinking, food preparation and brushing teeth until further notice. This is an essential measure introduced to protect public health after elevated turbidity which affected the treatment process at the local Coolnamuck Water Treatment Plant. The notice has been put in place to protect public health after increased levels of turbidity, or cloudiness, in the water affected the treatment process at the local water treatment plant.

The Boil Water Notice applies to 1,667 consumers who are served by Coolnamuck Water Treatment Plant and Seskin reservoir on the Carrick on Suir (Crotty’s Lake) Public Water Supply. This notice does not apply to consumers served from Crotty’s Lake Water Treatment Plant up to Seskin reservoir.

Areas affected by the Boil Water Notice include Carrigbeg, Greenhill Village, Greenhill Nursing Home, Rackhill, Castle Heights, Sonas Nursing Home, Sweet Auburn, Woodland Heights and St Mollerans.
Monitoring systems at the plant identified the issue yesterday evening and the plant automatically shut down to protect water quality. This resulted in a further interruption to supply in some areas. The Boil Water Notice will remain in place while Uisce Éireann works with the HSE to ensure the water is safe to drink.

Uisce Éireann recognises that this latest issue comes after a difficult week for people in Carrick-on-Suir, following a burst water main which caused reservoir levels to fall and affected supplies, particularly for people living on higher ground. Night-time restrictions were introduced during the week to help reservoir levels recover and restore supplies.

We understand how frustrating and worrying it will be for people to now face a Boil Water Notice following those earlier interruptions. Our teams are working to restore normal water quality and have the notice lifted as quickly and safely as possible. Alternative Water Supplies remain in place at Green Hill Village, Green Hill Nursing Home, Sonas Nursing Home, Outside St Mary’s Cemetery, and Mass Road.

Uisce Éireann's drinking water standards are among the strictest in Europe and include significant safety margins. Where a potential risk to water quality is identified through Uisce Éireann's testing and monitoring programme, the HSE is consulted and precautionary notices may be issued to protect public health.
 

What people need to know.

Water is safe to consume once it has been boiled and allowed to cool.

Water must be boiled before:
•    Drinking
•    Preparing drinks made with water
•    Preparing salads or other foods that will not be cooked before eating
•    Brushing teeth
•    Making ice

What people should do
•    Bring water to a vigorous rolling boil and allow it to cool before use.
•    Use boiled and cooled water when washing food that will not be cooked, such as salads.
•    Water can continue to be used for washing, bathing and flushing toilets, but should not be used for brushing teeth or gargling.
•    Domestic water filters will not make the water safe to drink.
•    Take extra care when bathing children to ensure they do not swallow the water.
•    Take care when handling boiled water to avoid burns and scalds.
