Ballyhaunis backed with wastewater plant upgrade

Uisce Éireann’s continuing investment in improving wastewater services for Mayo communities has arrived at another milestone, with the submission of an application for planning permission for the upgrade of the Ballyhaunis Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Permission is being sought for a major upgrade of the existing plant in Ballyhaunis, representing a significant investment in the wastewater infrastructure of the East Mayo town. The proposed upgrades will increase the capacity of the plant from its current population equivalent (PE) of 4,000 to a PE of 6,600 once works are complete.

Angus Hall of Uisce Éireann said that the submission of an application for planning permission to Mayo County Council marks a significant step forward in the progress of the planned upgrade works.

“We are delighted to have reached the point of submitting our application for planning permission on this project,” said Angus.

“These upgrade works, once complete, will increase the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant in Ballyhaunis by over 50%. This will allow for an improved service for existing customers in Ballyhaunis, while also allowing for new development in the town in the years ahead. The upgrade will also help to safeguard the environment of the local area.”

The planned works will include upgrades to the inlet, mechanical and electrical upgrades and ancillary works.

As the planned upgrades to the plant will take place on the existing site footprint, the impact of the works on the local community will be negligible. The plant will continue to function normally over the course of the upgrade works. Pending statutory approvals, it is hoped to commence construction in mid-2027.
