Accelerated investment to deliver new water mains for Mount Farran
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section
Just shy of 2.2km of old cast iron water mains in Mount Farran on the northside of Cork City are set to be replaced with new modern pipes which will improve water quality, provide a more reliable water supply and reduce leakage.
Brian McCarthy, Programme Manager said: “In many parts of Cork City, the pipes date back to the 1940s and Uisce Éireann has prioritised Mount Farran due to the deteriorating condition of the old cast iron mains in the area. Aged water mains and old service connections contribute to quality issues and water leakage. These works are part of our ongoing programme to modernise the water network.”
Uisce Éireann is continuing to invest in Cork City’s water infrastructure and this investment is another example of that commitment on the northside of the city.
Works on mains replacement are also taking place in Gurranabraher and in Knockpogue and Knockfree Avenues.
Brian O’Leary, Regional Operations Manager said: “We are delighted to progress these upgrades for the Mount Farran community - these long-term improvements to the water network are a critical step in addressing water quality issues and strengthening local supply. The replacement works are an important part of addressing intermittent reports of discolouration across the city and reflect Uisce Éireann’s ongoing commitment to replace legacy pipework for the communities most affected.”
Boots will be on the ground early next week with works taking place in the following locations: Mount Farran, Farran Cleary Place, Assumption Road, Rathmore Road, Goldsmith Avenue, Old Youghal Road, Richmond Hill and Audley Place.
Traffic management in the form of a stop/go system and localised road closures will be in place, as required, to safely facilitate works. Road closures will be communicated locally in advance.
Emergency and local access will always be maintained.
“We would like to thank customers in advance for their cooperation and patience while we complete these essential works,” said Mr McCarthy.
The project is being carried out by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann. The works may involve some short-term water interruptions, and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned disruption.
The works also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customer’s water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these are being replaced.
This project is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, provision of a more resilient and sustainable water supply for customers, and considerable water savings.
